As Vice President of Information Services Shared Services for UPS, Jim Medeiros directs I.S.'s global infrastructure, including Systems Programming, Computer Operations, Service Management, Field Technician Support and Telecommunications. Specific areas of responsibility include the operation of UPS's two world-class data centers and global distributed systems, systems programming for mainframe, midrange and X86 servers, infrastructure capacity management, security, voice, data and wireless telecommunications and technical support. Medeiros oversees the operation of the company's massive technology infrastructure, consisting of 15 mainframes processing 52,000 MIPS (million instructions per second), 2,300 midrange computers, 10,200 servers, 8 petabytes of stored data, 260,000 PCs, 550,000 customer systems, 15,000 wireless access points, and 3,200 networked sites.
Medeiros began his UPS career in 1988 as a project manager with International Systems. He held positions in I.S. applications development, Corporate International Systems, Corporate Repositories and Architectures and Shared Services. In 1992, he was named Applications Manager, coordinating I.S. support for UPS's international business. Medeiros led the development of world-class international shipment handling and customs clearance systems, earning UPS the prestigious Smithsonian Institute Award. He was also involved in the integration of UPS technologies into companies acquired in Europe, establishment of an Advanced Technology Group for assessing new technologies, and the formation of the Customer Service function within I.S.. He assumed his current position in 2004.
Medeiros has more than 30 years of experience in the field of information technology. Prior to joining UPS, he managed international applications development within the air freight industry.
A resident of Chester, NJ, Medeiros earned a B.A. from Rowan University and an M.A. from Loyola College. He is a board member for the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and its College of Computing Sciences.
